A Test of Endurance, It’s The OMM GLENTROOL 2016
This weekend will see one of the most testing and difficult two day events take place on the outdoor calendar – the Original Mountain Marathon Glentrool 2016.
With entries now closed, it’s set to be another fantastic event with teams of two are left, self-reliant we must add, to negotiate, wind, rain, hail, sleet, and maybe, if they’re lucky, a bit of sun, carrying the different items, they feel that is required to aid their trek.
Almost every element out there will be thrown in the team’s faces to offer the ultimate test and endurance, as they must locate a number of checkpoints spread across 420km2 remote course.
On the plus side, entrants will stay in a remote campsite within the mountains, so it’s not all doom and gloom, really, it’s the ultimate outdoor experience!
As it closes into it’s 50th year, this year being the 48th, the first run took place during 1968, as OMM describe it;
“First run in 1968 as a 2 day test of a person’s capability in the mountains, combining navigation, teamwork and skills. The Original Mountain Marathon is considered to be the event that all adventure races descend from. 2016 will be the 49th running of THE OMM.”
Since then, popularity continues to grow, with enthusiasts look to push their endurance, navigation and survival intelligence, over incredibly tough terrain featuring bogs, mud, tussocks and rock.
The beauty of this event is that it’s open to anyone who wants to give it ago, you don’t have to be at peak fitness levels or be the greatest navigator but as long as you and your partner have the mental edge and can collaborate well together, it’ll be a breeze.
After the pain, damp clothes, constant chopping gales, the reward of a hot meal at the end of the race is a welcomed one, even dragging those who are struggling, across the line!
We at Start Fitness are proud to say that we are the Official Retail for OMM products and will be at the at the event for those who feel that need some more last minute bits and bobs to be 100% ready to go.
