Final preparation instructions for your new bike

Your new bike has been prepared so that it’s ready to ride once a few final assembly tasks have been completed

We built this bike and checked it over to make sure that it is safe to ride. We have however, had to remove or reposition a few things for it to fit in the custom Start Cycles box.

1. Pedals – if pedals were supplied with your bike, you will need to fit them yourself or have a local bike shop fit them. They are easy to fit, provided that you have some basic tools and follow these simple instructions:

  • Take note- bicycle pedals have different threads on the left and the right side, the right pedal uses a standard thread (tightens clockwise), but the left pedal uses an opposite thread (tightens counter-clockwise).
  • Before threading the pedals into the cranks, apply grease to the pedal threads.
  • Pedals can usually be tightened with a 15mm open end spanner or in some cases a designated pedal spanner may be necessary if a standard spanner is too wide. Other pedals will need an allen key (usually 6 or 8mm) to tighten from the inside of the crank arm.

2. Handlebars – on road bikes (or other drop bar bikes e.g cyclocross), these are usually loosened off at the front plate in order to tilt downwards to allow packaging in to the box. In this instance, rotate the handlebars upwards to your desired position and tighten the front plate bolts evenly, following the manufacturer’s torque guidelines.

3. Handlebars - on flat bar bikes (MTB and hybrid etc), these will have been removed and require refitting. Remove the front plate of the stem and place the centre of the handlebar in the centre of the stem. Replace the stem front cap and tighten all bolts evenly, observing the manufacturers torque guidelines.
